چکیده

We studied the compaction of microporous vapor-deposited ice films under irradiation with different ions in the 80Y400 keVenergy range. We found that porosity decreases exponentially with irradiation fluence, with amean compaction area per ion that scales linearlywith the stopping power of the projectile S above a threshold St 1⁄4 4 eV8 . The experiments roughly follow a universal dependence of ion-induced compaction with restricted dose (eV molecule ). This behavior can be used to extrapolate our results to conditions of the interstellar medium. Relating our results to ionization rates of interstellar H2, we estimate that porous ice mantles on grains in dense molecular clouds are compacted by cosmic rays in 10Y50 million years. A study of interstellar aldehydes and enols as tracers of a cosmic ray-driven nonequilibrium synthesis of complex organic molecules.

Complex organic molecules such as sugars and amides are ubiquitous in star- and planet-forming regions, but their formation mechanisms have remained largely elusive until now. Here we show in a combined experimental, computational, and astrochemical modeling study that interstellar aldehydes and enols like acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and vinyl alcohol (C2H3OH) act as key tracers of a cosmic-ray-drive...

Methane ices are irradiated at 4 ] 10~10 mbar at temperatures between 10 and 50 K with 9.0 MeV a-particles and 7.3 MeV protons to elucidate the formation of atomic as well as molecular hydrogen via interaction of Galactic cosmic-ray particles with extraterrestrial organic ices. Theoretical calculations focus on computer simulations of ion-induced collision cascades in irradiated targets. Our da...

Understanding the Kinetics and Dynamics of Radiation-induced Reaction Pathways in Carbon Monoxide Ice at 10 K

Carbon monoxide is the second most abundant molecule on icy grains in the interstellar medium. It also exists on Pluto, Triton, comets, and possibly in other icy bodies of the outer solar system like Kuiper Belt objects. With the intense radiation fields that permeate virtually all unprotected regions of space, carbon monoxide ices can be processed through energetic particle bombardment (planet...

Methane, ethylene, and acetylene ices were irradiated in a ultra-high vacuum vessel between 10 K and 50 K with 7.3 MeV protons as well as 9.0 MeV He2` nuclei to simulate the interaction of galactic cosmic-ray particles with extraterrestrial, organic ices and to elucidate a mechanistic model to synthesize experimentally detected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Theoretical calculations c...

Pahs and Astrobiology

In dense molecular clouds, the birthplace of stars and planets, interstellar atoms and molecules freeze onto extremely cold dust and ice particles. These ices are processed by ultraviolet light and cosmic rays forming hundreds of far more complex species, some of astrobiological interest. Eventually, these rain down on primordial planets where they take part in the young chemistry on these new ...
